Training
I love helping people learn about online media.
I teach online journalism, personal branding and writing for non native English speakers to students at the University of Glamorgan. I’ve previously taught online journalism on City University’s MA Journalism with Paul Bradshaw.
I also train practicing journalists how to effectively use the online space and social media. Training can be done in small groups of similar skill level, or in one-to-one tailored tutorials. Topics can include:
- Facebook – profiles, pages, groups, events, places, adverts, searching and analytics
- Twitter – culture and conversation, creating accounts, searching, retweets, hashtags, mentions, private messaging, URL shorteners and analytics, mobile tweeting, photo and video tweets, management and monitoring tools
- YouTube and Vimeo – accounts, channels, uploading videos, sharing, searching
- Flickr – photo sharing and photo use, profiles, groups, searching, monitoring
- Blogging – understanding what ‘blog’ means, using WordPress and other blogging tools, such as Blogger and Tumblr, managing conversation and comments, tags and search engine optimisation
- RSS – using subscriptions to monitor multiple websites, setting up Google Reader, mashing up subscriptions, streaming content using RSS subscriptions
- Mapping – formatting data in spreadsheets and translating it into interactive maps, using tools such as Google Maps, Google Fusion Tables, ManyEyes, and OpenHeatMaps
- Live blogging – planning content, filtering and curating social media, producing from the newsroom, contributing from the field, live blogging tools such as CoverItLive
- Writing for the web – influence of search engines, headlines, story structure, links, tags
- Multimedia storytelling – understanding how to tell coherent stories using several pieces of digital and social media content, embedding online media such as video and audio, using tools such as Storify
